List Of QLD Mines (In Production & Closed)
- Box Flat Mine – Closed
Located in Ipswich, QLD, the Box Flat Mine was closed 3 years after it opened in 1969 after 17 miners lost their lives due to a gas explosion. - Goonyella Riverside Mine – Open
Run by the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, this coal mine is located 30km out of Moranbah, QLD. - Jeebropilly Mine – Closed
Run by New Hope Coal, this open pit mine located near Amberly closed in Feb 2007 after 25 years of operation. - Mount Isa Mines – Open
Xstrata run a collection of mines near Mount Isa that extract copper, lead, zinc and silver. Mount Isa is a city with around 30,000 people and is located in the north-west of the state. - Mount Morgan Mines – Closed
Closed in 1981 after 99 years of operation, the Mount Morgan mine extracted about 280tonne of gold and 387,000 tonnes of copper. - New Acland Mine – Open
This 500 million tonne coal mine, also owned by New Hope Coal, started extraction in 2002. Located just north of Oakey in the Darling Downs region of QLD. - New Oakleigh Mine – Open
Still currently mining although owners were to cease operations sometime around 2009. The New Oalkeigh mine is extracted by excavators and front end loaders. - Peak Downs Mine – Open
Another operation by BMA (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance). Located in the Bowen Basin, this open cut coking mine started production in 1972.
While there are other QLD mines, this is a good start with quite a lot of diversity. There are more mines in Queensland that are in the works and we will be sure to let you know when they are open for business.
